Roccaraso Ski Area

In the winter months, guests can enjoy a full day of skiing just over an hour away in Roccaraso, one of Italy’s premier ski destinations. With over 130 km of downhill slopes and an extensive network of lifts connecting Roccaraso, Rivisondoli, and Pescocostanzo, the area caters to everyone from beginners to expert skiers. Costa dei Trabocchi

At the coast, lies the Trabocchi Coast, a stretch of Adriatic shoreline known for its rustic wooden fishing platforms (“trabocchi”) that stand above the sea on stilts. Many have been converted into unique seaside restaurants, perfect for a romantic seafood lunch suspended above the waves. The coastline also features bike paths, secret coves, and crystal-clear water – an unforgettable day trip in warmer months.

Windmill Trail of Castiglione Messer Marino

Right above the house, a scenic walk leads to the Castiglione Windmill Trail, a wide-open ridge where you can spot Monte Amaro in the distance. On lucky days, you might even encounter a herd of wild horses grazing along the trail. It’s a beautiful walk in the morning or evenings, with the valley unfolding on one side and the sky stretching wide above.

Roccasalegna Castle

Perched dramatically on a rocky spur, Roccascalegna Castle feels lifted straight from a fantasy novel. This medieval fortress offers sweeping views and atmospheric stone halls, and it’s less than an hour’s drive from Casa Emmy. A perfect stop for those drawn to history and cinematic scenery.

Borgo Medioevale di Gessopalena

A haunting and beautiful medieval village partly carved into white rock, Gessopalena is a fascinating stop just 40 minutes away. Its ghost-like ruins and intact medieval features make for a quiet, unforgettable walk through time.

Teatro Sannita di Pietrabbondante

Step into the past at the ancient Samnite Theater of Pietrabbondante, an archaeological gem tucked in the hills. Built in the 2nd century BCE, the stone amphitheater and surrounding ruins offer a glimpse into pre-Roman culture (without the crowds of Rome) – and a stunning view over the valleys below.

Fara San Martino

Known as the “town of pasta,” Fara San Martino is home to several iconic Italian pasta producers, including De Cecco. Set at the mouth of a dramatic gorge, it’s also a beautiful place for hiking and dipping your feet into the cool mountain streams flowing through the valley.

Villa Santa Maria

Famous for its culinary school and traditions, Villa Santa Maria is a small riverside town where food and nature meet. In the warmer months, natural swimming spots form in the river – a peaceful way to cool off in crystal-clear water surrounded by forest.
